757X - The Boeing 737 Replacement?

The Boeing 757 was a big success, and 1,050 of them were made before production stopped in 2004. Because of its long range and good performance, it became a popular part of flight fleets. Airlines are still looking for an alternative, and the Airbus A321XLR is only part of the answer. Would it be a good idea for Boeing to make changes to the 757 for its next mid-size plane and replace 737?
