Judging the readiness of garlic.
There are many guiding factors including whether the leaves are 100% green, which suggest more growth can happen.

However you can see by the large and slightly split bulb I harvest that it's fully mature, while many of its leaves are still green.
So a good technique is to pull the soil and compost back a little. So that you see the bulb and check for differentiation of cloves.

In this video the two different varieties were planted in October, same time. I don't know their names because I first saved the planting stock a long time ago, and one come from a store, unnamed. Then last year I noticed that one but of many, had rust resistance - and it's slower to mature. All remaining garlic between the tomatoes are from that bulb's cloves.

All of these garlic are softneck. Hardnecks mature 2-3 weeks later. If not rusty!
I shall post another video tomorrow about outdoor garlic which has rust. That changes your options.
