In September 2023 I hiked from the coast of northern Norway nearly 200 kilometres east across the Scandinavian mountains into Sweden, through Rago National Park, Padjelanta National Park and, very briefly, Sarek National Park. I was completely alone in the wilderness with only wildlife for company: elk, reindeer, stoats, golden eagles, white-tailed eagles and bears, although I only saw their tracks.
This second instalment covers the eight days I spent crossing Padjelanta, a high altitude plateau, 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle. In this remote mountain country the Sami community manage the reindeer herds. They have seasonal settlements and operate mountain huts for trekkers in the summer. I hiked this route in September when the huts were closed but with one room left open for crazy people like me who like to trek out of season. I had the mountains all to myself for ten days.
I encountered two days of driving snow and many other days of incessant rain. I had to abandon my original plan of trekking through Sarek due to swollen rivers and deep snow drifts. Instead I stuck to the Padjelantaleden and arranged a boat pick up for the final four miles to Kvikkjokk. There I completed my solo hike from the Norwegian coast through the mountains of Norway and Sweden. Remember that hiking and mountain climbing can be dangerous. The videos on my channel are for entertainment only (other than where specified). Always prepare well and be willing to abandon a trip if it becomes dangerous due to weather or unexpected trail conditions. If you are new to hiking and the great outdoors it's always a good idea to go with a guide or a more experienced companion.
And remember - give the wildlife some space, leave no trace, go quietly and enjoy it out there!
A word on drones - I know how annoying it is to hear a drone whizzing about when you are trying to enjoy the peace and solitude of wild places. I'm also aware of the potential to disturb wildlife with them. I always avoid flying the drone when there are other hikers around. It's one of the reasons I tend to hike at less popular times of day and in mid-week and I avoid using the drone if I do see others nearby. I never fly a drone towards wildlife or where birds are likely to be nesting.
