Hello there, I am a GM in RISK, and similar to The Kill Pete Strategy (if you don't know him, how? https://www.youtube.com/@TheKillPeteStrategy), I created a new account a couple of weeks ago to play just the meta settings to see how far I can get. I will be uploading as many of my games as possible from this account, from here on until I get bored I guess. Love these settings, and I will be uploading wins and losses.
WOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!! WHAT A GAME!! And what a way to reach my goal (and so soon!). This is by far, the most nuanced and intricate 1v1 I've ever seen, let alone played in. Did I play it perfectly? No, I was far FAR from it. Did my opponent play it perfectly? Also no. Because we are humans. Does that take anything away from how insane this 1v1 was? Absolutely not. If you're wondering, like I was, the final major roll in the game (23 attackers vs my 20 defenders) had a 29.67% chance of winning for black on balanced blitz, so they rolled manually, which increased their chances to 37.30% (courtesy of https://riskcalc.wixsite.com/riskblitzcalculator/calculator), so I had roughly a 5/8 chance of winning on that turn. What a way to end a 1v1 like that.
I recently created some guidelines that I have been mentioning in my videos, and I have decided to post them here. Most of them are common sense and just what I've been saying anyway, but hey, can't hurt.
tl;dr do normal prog stuff and protect the cap
Meta settings guidelines:
1) Your cap is more important than any bonuses you might be holding
2) Look for ways to take kills that get you 5 or more cards during your turn, and calculate if they are worth it
3) Hide your true speed until it is too late for anyone to realise who the biggest threat is
4) Attempt to find ways to make yourself seem stronger than you are
5) Practice cap placement and work out basic strategies for different areas and strengths
1v1 guidelines:
1) If you can cardblock the opponent, then do your best to do it while leaving as many cards as possible for yourself
2) Focus on hitting as many troops as possible for a net positive for yourself
2a) If your opponent leaves troops off-cap or leaves a weak cap, hit them
3) Make sure that any troops your opponent could hit will cost them more than what you'll lose
3a) Leave as many troops as possible on open caps
I am awful at following my own guidelines, but if you stick to them as best you can, I guarantee that you will gain rank over time.
After this game, I am now 25-26, and a GM OH YEA!!!
