I hiked alone for four days and nights in Fisherfield, often referred to as the Great Wilderness (of Scotland). More from Torridon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r21Pa4OYRkROUTE GUIDE below...

• ROUTE GUIDE
Fisherfield is a vast area of trackless mountain country in north-west Scotland with eight munros (mountains over 3000 feet high). I've been many times before but more often to the north and western parts so this time I headed in from Kinlochewe by bike and on foot and camped on the shore of Lochan Fada where I was joined one evening by a black-throated diver and its chick. A rare and beautiful bird that breeds on upland lochs.

The weather was grey and windy most of the time but on the last day the sun came out and I headed up the three nearby munros: Beinn Tarsuinn (937m), Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair (1019m) and Sgurr Ban (987m). All three have magnificent views across the mountains of Torridon and Fisherfield from Beinn Eighe in the south to An Teallach in the north.

This is without doubt one of the wildest regions in Britain but is it a wilderness? Many people would argue that it isn't because just like most other areas in the Scottish Highlands the land is over-browsed by deer and much of the native wildlife has been extirpated (wolves, lynx, bear). Those bare mountain slopes should really be covered in birch and oak woodland. Nevertheless this is still one of my favourite areas to go hiking and exploring. Scotland at its best.

• MOUNTAIN SAFETY Remember that hiking and mountain climbing can be dangerous. The videos on my channel are for entertainment only (other than where specified). Always prepare well and be willing to abandon a trip if it becomes dangerous due to weather or unexpected trail conditions. If you are new to hiking and the great outdoors it's always a good idea to go with a guide or a more experienced companion. And remember - give the wildlife some space, leave no trace, go quietly and enjoy it out there!

• A word on DRONES I know how annoying it can be to hear a drone whizzing about when you are trying to enjoy the peace and solitude of wild places. I'm also aware of the potential to disturb wildlife with them. I always avoid flying the drone when there are other hikers around. It's one of the reasons I tend to hike at less popular times of day and in mid-week and I avoid using the drone if I do see others nearby. I never fly a drone towards wildlife or where birds are likely to be nesting.
