In late June 2018, I flew into Reykjavík from Manchester and met up with my friend who flew in from America. We picked up our pre-booked campervan from the company ‘Campervan Iceland’ (https://www.campervaniceland.com) who were the perfect choice! Our campervan was just right for two people. It had a double mattress in the back with plenty of space underneath to fit our rucksacks as well as a fold out table, chairs and a gas stove for cooking on the road.
We made a quick pit stop at a supermarket to buy all of the food we would need for the next 4 days, before setting off on Iceland’s famous ring road! 1,332 km long (828 miles), it is recommended to give yourself at least 7 days to explore each of the famous sights on the ring road, so we really were taking a gamble only giving ourselves 4 days to do it in – especially considering only one of us could drive (sorry Kristen), but honestly, it worked out so well, and we saw almost everything we wanted to. We didn’t have time to see the Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck as you have to park up and walk to it, which is around a 2 hour round trip. Nonetheless, only missing one of the main sights was an achievement!
Our itinerary for the drive was as follows…
DAY 1: Geysir (sokkur), Gullfoss, Seljalansfoss, Sokgafoss
DAY 2: Reynisfjara, Reynisdrangar, Skoftofell, Jokulsarlon, Seljavallalaug pools, Stokksness
DAY 3: Seydisfjorodur, Lagarfljot Krafla, Viti Crater, Mývatn Nature Baths, Lake Myvatn, Godafoss
DAY 4: Hvammstangi, Kirkjufell, Londrangar, Dagverdara, Hellnar, Arnarstapi (Gatklettur), Raudfeldsgja gorge
The trip was INCREDIBLE!! Iceland is the most unique and beautiful country I’ve ever visited and we had such an amazing time exploring it. I would love to go again and experience the country in winter too, but I would still 100% recommend visiting in summer too, the 24 hours of daylight is magical (and also meant we could have power naps then drive in the middle of the night with the sun shining in the sky!)
Thanks for watching x
