SUMMARY: The Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center (MVAC) at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse conducted Phase III archaeological excavations at 47CR660, the Lessard Site, in Prairie du Chien, Crawford County, Wisconsin. This was for a Department of Transportation bypass project. The Phase III investigations identified two adjacent rectangular limestone foundations, one dating from the early 1830s into the 1840s, and the other dating from the mid-to late 1840s into the 1860s. Diagnostic ceramics and bottles from the site helped determine the date range for each. Based on the architecture, types of material recovered, and deposition patterns, it is presumed that both foundations were privies. This lecture will discuss the history of the area, the site excavations, and some of the material cultural recovered.
