SFPA Weighing Fiasco Continues In Killybegs Today
The SFPA weighing saga continued in Killybegs again today when the second Blue Whiting vessel in a week declined to land their catch because of concerns over damage to the quality of the fish which was destined for human consumption.
In a replay of the scenario experienced by the "RUTH" recently, the insistence by the SFPA that the fish be dewatered prior to weighing left no other option to the Skipper of the Norwegian Vessel "Ingrid Majala" than to depart the port and seek to land his 950 ton catch back in Denmark or Norway.
A second Norwegian Vessel due to land in Killybegs this evening has now altered her course to bypass the town and also land elsewhere.
It is also reported that 2 Irish Pelagic vessels that had their catch destined for sale as food for human consumption where forced to sell it off as fishmeal due to the same dewatering process being implemented by the SFPA
Unless a resolution to this current impasse is found quickly there is unlikely to be any more landings by the Blue Whiting vessels this year resulting in a severe financial loss to the town.
According to one local processor the reputational damage being done to the port of Killybegs is immense and the fallout is incalculable.

*Update*
Norwegian vessel Ingrid Majala offloaded it's catch of Blue Whiting at Derry to be weighed by UK inspectors and then transported via road back to Killybegs to be weighed at processing factory to comply with import regulations with the fish then finally processed for human consumption.
