During WWII Frank Capra directed this film titled 'War Comes To America'. -- The show was completed in 1945. 'War Comes To America' was shown in theaters throughout the country. By the end of the war over 54 million Americans of the 140 million 1945 population had seen the show. The war ended in 1945 with the surrender of Germany - May 8,9 and Japan September 2nd.
'War Comes To America' was the 7th film of the series 'Why We Fight'.
Capra worked on this series directly under 5 Star General George Marshall, Chief of Staff of the US Army. Marshall wanted documented, factual films that explain to our young Army men why we are fighting, and the principles we are fighting for, including the cause of freedom.
Capra's goal was to "let the enemy prove to our soldiers the enormity of their cause—and the justness of ours." To use the enemy's own films to expose their enslaving ends. To 'let our boys hear the Nazis and the Japs shout their own claims of master-race crud—and our fighting men will know why they are in uniform'.
Capra was already an established Hollywood director including films winning Academy Awards such as It Happened One Night (1934) and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939).
'War Comes To America' was edited to 58 minutes by reducing the opening minutes. The missing section about the American people is in the additional film 'Americans Before World War II' which includes significant events in America's history and their importance.
