Manitowoc Public Library is proud to present our fourteenth year of hosting this preeminent eight-week grassroots lecture series. MPL decided to go completely virtual with the Great Decisions program this year, livestreaming it on our Facebook page and YouTube channel. As such, anyone with a thirst for knowledge and an internet connection will have the opportunity to discover, discuss and decide how to meet some of the world’s greatest challenges head-on, every Monday evening at 6 PM in February and March.

Tonight. March 8, Elizabeth Wheat, PhD, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, will be discussing “Struggles Over the Melting Arctic.” Because of climate change, large sheets of arctic ice are melting, exposing vast stores of natural gas and oil. Not surprisingly, these changes has led to an increased United States interest in the region. However, Russia and China are already miles ahead with their Arctic strategies. Can the U.S. catch up? And even if this can be accomplished, what should the position be on the Arctic regardless moving forward?
