CIC Nipissing and CIC Edmonton welcomed John Foster on October 6, 2021 to speak on pipeline politics around the world.

In his presentation, John addresses the role of petroleum in ongoing tensions and rivalries between the United States, Russia and China. Since his talk to CIC branches two years ago, US relations with China and Russia have nosedived. After being the world’s hegemon for thirty years, the US aims to contain the rise of Russia and China. Petroleum politics are part of the story, for example Nord Stream 2. Facing a hostile America, China and Russia have formed a strategic partnership, with both countries investing heavily in pipelines. Since 9/11, Western countries have launched military interventions and imposed sanctions on one petroleum country after another. None has been successful. Why does Canada support these actions? John explores these issues and more.
