The travel writer Dan Richards talks to Paul Blezard about his book Outpost: A Journey to the Wild Ends of the Earth. There are still wild places out there on our crowded planet and through a series of personal journeys, Dan Richards explored the appeal of far-flung outposts in mountains, tundra, forests, oceans and deserts from the Mars Desert Research Station in the Utah desert to frozen ghost towns in Svalbard and shrines in Japan; from the fire-watch lookouts of Washington State to Iceland's 'Houses of Joy’ about which Dan treats us to a reading of a real ghost story. They discuss the philosophy of responsible travel to pristine wilderness, a subject that is at the forefront of many minds while the landscape of travelling and exploration is going through such a change.
