I am currently studying the music production & recording program at the University of Stavanger, Norway, and this video is my research project for the 1st semester. All the rooms you see in the video are various educational performance spaces of our Faculty of Performing Arts, in the Bjergsted campus. It is a great opportunity to study here in this beautiful learning environment, and absolutely a tremendous privilege to have the guidance of Mr. Mark Drews, a true master of this industry with a life-long experience. Being able to come and study here is probably the turning point of my life, I can't appreciate it enough!

So, the idea of this video is to record the same drums with the same microphones while the same drummer plays the same thing for the same song, but in different rooms; and see the effect of the room acoustics on the tone of the instrument. So there's no processing on the audio you hear other than a high pass filter on 30hz. No eq colorization, no compression, no artificial reverb; just the volume mix of the raw recording...

Besides the encouragement from Mark, I must say that "the Wikidrummer" inspired me to do this. But I'm not really a good solo drummer, so I wanted to do the same thing in a musical context. Still, for those who want to hear the difference between the rooms better, here is the "drums only" version of the same recording:

The lovely tune I am playing along to is "Dört Duvar" by my dear friend Şeyma Özbay. Huge thanks to her for letting me use her song for this project! Check her out, she released an amazing album!

About the gear I used in recording:
A pair of Sennheiser 8020 omni mics for the room.
Sennheiser e906 on top of the snare drum
Beyerdynamic TG D70d in front of the bass drum.
Beyerdynamic TG D57d on the rack toms
Beyerdynamic TG D58d on the floor toms
Millenia HV3-R Preamps
Mytek 8x192 AD/DA Converter
Zoom Q8 for video recording. Didn't use the audio from Q8.
I am playing DW Collectors Series maple drums with Aquarian heads on them, and Zildjian K Custom cymbals.
