➤ JUMP AHEAD TO OUR ST KILDA TRAVEL INFO 15:44

St Kilda is a small archipelago about 40 miles west of North Uist in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. It is known for its dramatic landscape formed by an ancient volcano, its vast seabird colony (particularly gannets), and fascinating cultural heritage. It is a dual UNESCO World Heritage site, inscribed for both natural and cultural criteria.

Having been inhabited for thousands of years, the last St Kildans were evacuated in 1930, with life on this remote, isolated island no longer sustainable. Today the island is owned and managed by the National Trust for Scotland, with the MoD (who operate a radar station here) maintaining a year-round presence on the island.

It’s possible to visit St Kilda between April and September (weather permitting!) on a day trip by boat from Skye, Harris, Barra, or Eriskay. It takes between 2.5 and 4 hours one way to get to St Kilda, where you can land on the main island of Hirta for a few hours, before taking a boat trip around the outlying island of Boreray and the prominent sea stacks Stac Lee and Stac an Armin, home to tens of thousands of gannets.
