The transatlantic alliance as it is embodied in NATO and other institutions has been at the forefront of promoting the idea that – as President Biden calls it - democracy works since the end of WWII. The transatlantic community has guaranteed peace, security, economic prosperity, and political agency for its citizens. Recently, however, the transatlantic partnership has been fractured – free-trade visions have given way to protectionist economies, states’ financial commitments to NATO as well as energy issues such as Nord Stream II provide constant areas of friction. How can and should the transatlantic community move forward?

In this talk, we will discuss with Dr. Kori Schake and Elisabeth Braw the future of the transatlantic partnership and whether it will be able to indeed prove that democracy still works.

DR. KORI SCHAKE is the director of foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). Before joining AEI, Dr. Schake was the deputy director-general of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. She has had a distinguished career in government, working at the US State Department, the US Department of Defense, and the National Security Council at the White House. She has also taught at Stanford, West Point, Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, National Defense University, and the University of Maryland.

ELISABETH BRAW is a Visiting Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where she focuses on deterrence against emerging forms of aggression, such as hybrid and grey zone threats. She is also a columnist with Foreign Policy, where she writes on national security and the globalised economy.
